Doula Code of Ethics

Purpose

The Code of Ethics establishes standards for certified Community Perinatal Doulas, protecting client trust, supporting client-centered care, and preventing agenda-pushing and scope drift.

Six Core Ethical Principles

1. Client Autonomy and Informed Choice — respect clients' decision-making rights regarding their body, birth, baby, and family, with balanced education and respectful communication, free of pressure, shame, or fear-based tactics.
2. Scope and Safety Humility — operate within Community Perinatal Doula scope, avoiding diagnosis, treatment, or medical advice; encourage timely evaluation by a licensed provider when concerns exceed scope.
3. Respect and Non-Discrimination — extend dignity, respect, and compassion to all clients regardless of background, beliefs, family structure, or choices.
4. Confidentiality and Privacy — protect client information, sharing only what is necessary for the purpose, with written permission when sharing with others.
5. Integrity and Professionalism — maintain honesty about role, training, and limitations, avoiding conflicts of interest, misleading claims, and boundary violations.
6. Fidelity and Accountability — honor commitments and support client-led goals through encouragement, problem-solving, and practical next steps, without control or coercion.

This policy is mandatory for certification and recertification.
